Reports to: Director of Facilities

Work Agreement: 260 Days, 8 hours per day 

Hourly Pay Starts at $17.67 and is based on related job experience

Crete Public Schools is seeking applications for a full-time District Maintenance position, with a primary focus on grounds care and upkeep.

This is a year-round position (260 days, 8 hours per day).

Responsibilities include maintaining school grounds and supporting general maintenance tasks across the district.

This position is available for immediate start.

Essential Requirements:

  1. High School Diploma or GED/or equivalent experience
  2. Custodial/Maintenance experience preferred
  3. First aid knowledge preferred
  4. Successful completion of background check
  5. Must maintain at all times during employment an unrestricted motor vehicle operator’s license and a satisfactory driving record that meets requirements of Board policy

Job Tasks:

Assist as directed with the following items:  

Grounds Work

  1. Operate and maintain grounds equipment (e.g., mowers, trimmers, blowers, utility vehicles)

  2. Snow removal and ice control during winter months (shovel, salt sidewalks, etc.)

  3. Assist with seasonal landscaping (planting flowers, trimming bushes, removing leaves)

  4. Inspect and maintain playgrounds and outdoor facilities for safety and cleanliness

  5. Set up and tear down outdoor areas for school events or athletic activities

  6. Clean and maintain outdoor signage and lighting around campus

  7. Assist with fence, gate, and exterior structure repairs as needed

  8. Water grass and landscaping manually when needed

  9. Monitor irrigation systems and report or repair malfunctions

  10. Maintain athletic fields (dragging baseball fields, lining fields, repairing turf)

  11. Remove graffiti or perform minor painting/touch-ups on exterior surfaces

  12. Perform regular grounds inspections to identify hazards or areas needing attention

Maintenance Work

  1. Perform general maintenance and repair of district buildings and facilities, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting tasks.

  2. Maintain school grounds: mow lawns, trim edges, remove weeds, rake leaves, and pick up trash or debris.

  3. Conduct routine inspections of buildings, systems, and equipment to identify and address issues promptly.

  4. Maintain and repair HVAC systems, lighting, and other mechanical systems (basic troubleshooting).

  5. Assist with snow and ice removal from walkways, driveways, and parking lots during winter months.

  6. Move and set up furniture, classroom equipment, and materials for events or relocations.

  7. Maintain and repair playground equipment, fencing, gates, and other outdoor fixtures.

  8. Perform preventive maintenance according to schedules and district standards.

  9. Monitor and operate irrigation and sprinkler systems; make adjustments and minor repairs as needed.

  10. Spray or remove weeds from sidewalks, landscaping beds, and fence lines.

  11. Maintain exterior areas including entrances, sidewalks, and school signage for cleanliness and safety.

  12. Assist with delivery and distribution of supplies, equipment, or mail across district buildings.

  13. Respond to work orders and emergency maintenance issues in a timely manner.

  14. Support custodial staff as needed, especially during high-demand periods or absences.

  15. Maintain inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment; request replenishment as necessary.

  16. Ensure all work is completed in accordance with safety standards, codes, and regulations.

Custodial Work

  1. Sweep, mop, scrub, and vacuum floors to maintain cleanliness.

  2. Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms and restroom supplies.

  3. Gather and dispose of trash and recycling materials from designated areas.

  4. Clean windows, mirrors, and glass surfaces for clear visibility and appearance.

  5. Dust and polish furniture, fixtures, walls, and equipment regularly.

  6. Clean and polish furniture and fixtures as needed.

  7. Shampoo or steam-clean carpets according to a regular schedule or as needed.

  8. Move and arrange heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies.

  9. Notify supervisors of the need for major repairs or additions to building systems.

  10. Assist with setting up and cleaning up after events or meetings.

  11. Maintain cleaning equipment and supplies in good working order.

  12. Follow all safety and health regulations and procedures.

Student Transportation

This position includes the possibility of driving students on occasion, depending on district needs. 

  1. Operate gasoline, diesel, or electric multi-passenger vehicles to transport students between neighborhoods, schools, and school-related activities.

  2. Perform routine pre-trip inspections, including checking tires, brakes, lights, wipers, fluid levels, and safety equipment to ensure vehicle readiness.

  3. Adhere to all traffic laws and operate vehicles in a safe, courteous, and responsible manner.

  4. Follow established safety procedures when loading and unloading students.

  5. Pick up and drop off students at designated locations according to a fixed schedule.

  6. Navigate routes using maps and follow written or verbal directions as needed.

  7. Adjust heating, lighting, and ventilation systems to ensure passenger comfort.

  8. Assist younger children in safely crossing streets when necessary.

  9. Maintain a clean and orderly vehicle interior for student passengers.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Perform other tasks or duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Director of Facilities.

FLSA Exempt Status: Non-exempt.

Essential Functions:   The essential functions of the Custodian position include: (1) regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job; (2) the ability to perform the identified tasks and performance responsibilities which require effective teaching and communication skills; and (3) the ability to perform the following identified physical requirements.

At-Will Position. This position is an “at-will” position and may be terminated, with or without cause, at any time in the sole discretion of the Superintendent or Superintendent’s designee.
