Job purpose
At Native Solutions Family Guidance Center/Trade , the Substance Abuse Disorder Registered Counselor (SUDRC) provides Chemical Dependency services to adults, adolescents and significant others of CD patients under supervision. This role includes:
- Answers and triages patient calls for information, general CD counseling.
- Responds to and appropriately handles crisis calls.
- Identifies need for higher level assessment (e.g. other, non-CD, MH diagnoses; danger to self or others; non-CD crisis evaluations; emotional/family dysfunction).
- Performs intake and orientation.
- Develops and presents treatment plans to the treatment team for recommendations, revisions and approval.
- Participates in clinical case conferences.
- Conducts chemical dependency focused educational curriculum.
- Provides general chemical dependency counseling to include individual and group counseling services.
- May provide, significant Other, Family and Multi-Family therapy only under licensed supervision as assigned.
- Provides case management services to include resource and referral coordination.
- Must possess a valid California Drivers License
- Other duties as assigned.
Additionally, upon completion of supervised hours, the employee must obtain state licensure within two and one-half (2.5) years. If hired as a license-eligible employee (i.e. has completed all clinical hours), the employee has two and one-half (2.5) years from their date of hire to complete state licensure.

Duties and responsibilities
- Facilitate Group and Educational Sessions : Conduct group, educational sessions, and client interviews.
- Manage Client Caseload : Oversee and track assigned client caseloads and progress in accordance with program regulations and State/County requirements.
- Collaborative Planning : Lead treatment and recovery planning with a focus on personal choice and clients’ individual goals.
- Maintain Professional Boundaries : Ensure clear roles and boundaries in the counseling/client relationship.
- Assess Client Strengths : Identify clients’ strengths, coping resources, and resilience while prioritizing their physical and emotional safety.
- Support Participants : Provide direct support, resources, and services to participants in need.
- Update Community Resources : Stay informed about community resources and their availability.
- Strengths-Based Case Management : Offer strengths-based case management to participants.
- Manage Program Documentation : Create, update, and store program forms and information in both digital and hard copy formats.
- Assist with Grant Reporting : Contribute to the preparation of monthly reports for grants.
- Handle Enrollment and Scheduling : Manage participant enrollment and scheduling.
Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned 25%
- Attend Monthly Meetings : Participate in monthly meetings and provide case management services as required.
- Use Cleaning Equipment : Operate various cleaning equipment and solvents effectively.
- Ensure Workplace Safety : Maintain a safe and organized work environment.
- Conduct Vehicle Inspections : Inspect vehicles upon drop-off and after cleaning to ensure quality.
- Staff Coverage : Provide coverage for staff during breaks and in cases of absence.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Understanding Principles and Policies : Familiarity with Native Solutions’ policies, principles, and practices.
- Knowledge of Addiction : In-depth understanding of drug and alcohol addiction.
- Behavioral Principles : Knowledge of individual and group behavior principles.
- Cultural Competency : Expertise in working with diverse and marginalized populations, including minorities, LGBTQ individuals, those with mental illness, veterans, the homeless, women, and the elderly.
- Trauma Effects : Ability to comprehend the impact of various types of trauma on human development and related psychological and substance use behaviors.
- Client Safety : Understanding of the importance of ensuring clients' physical and emotional safety, avoiding actions that could trigger trauma symptoms or acute stress.
- Cultural Sensitivity to Trauma : Awareness of how different cultures perceive trauma and their attitudes towards behavioral health treatment, including mental health issues, cognitive and physical disabilities, and substance use.
- Role Clarity : Ability to maintain clear roles and boundaries within the counseling/client relationship.
- Scope of Practice : Ability to recognize when clients’ needs exceed the counselor’s expertise or when trauma activates persistent secondary trauma or countertransference reactions, making appropriate referrals to the clinical team.
- Certification Maintenance : Capability to obtain and maintain relevant certifications, ensuring renewal before expiration.
- Flexible Scheduling : Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, and weekends.
- Group Facilitation : Skills in facilitating groups and educational sessions.
- Motivational Interviewing : Proficiency in applying Motivational Interviewing techniques.
- Effective Communication : Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups.
- Confidentiality : Commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality of sensitive participant information and agency records.
- Team Collaboration : Ability to build cooperative relationships and work effectively with management, clinical team members, and both counseling and administrative staff.
- Policy Adherence : Understanding and following organizational policies and procedures.
- Self-Motivation : Highly motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal skills.
- Organization and Judgment : Ability to meet deadlines, stay organized, pay attention to detail, and exercise good judgment and common sense.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education and Experience : High school diploma or equivalent, plus two years of relevant experience.
- Safety Training : Completion of a 24-hour safety training course also provided by Native Solutions
- Mental Health First Aid : Must obtain and maintain certification (training provided).
- CPR Certification : Must obtain and maintain certification (training provided).
- Mandated Reporter Training : Must complete upon hire (training provided).
- 9 Hour Ethics and Boundaries : (training provided).
Additional Requirements
- Background Check : Completion of fingerprinting and background checks, including FBI, DOJ, CACI, and Sex Offender Registry, is required upon hire. These checks are conducted at the agency's expense, but only if the background is clear. Failure to pass the background check will result in the withdrawal of the job offer.
- Transportation Requirements : Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and DMV clearance.
- Auto Insurance : Must have and maintain current auto insurance.
